If ever you find yourself in the mood to sink your gnashers into a deliciously twisted, guessing-game of a crime thriller that will take hold of you by the neck of your t-shirt and refuse to let go, right until the very last page, when it finally lobs on you on the floor, leaving you completely exhilarated, then JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON by GILLIAN MCALLISTER is absolutely worth adding to your to-read list. This was absolutely fantastic, proper edge-of-your-seat stuff, and it made me fall for McAllisters' work all over again.
It's been a while since I last delved into a novel by McAllister, but when I was offered the chance to read and review her latest release, how on earth could I say no? Without a doubt, she writes some of the most unbelievable crime thrillers in the market. Edgy, dark and cut-throat sharp, they're addictive after the first couple of pages, and JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON was no different.
Following the disappearance of twenty-two year-old Olivia, detective Julia sets out to uncover the truth behind her vanishing. Always on the ball, and never one to not give 100%, this case is one she just can't seem to get her head around, because the deeper she delves, the more devastating the consequences become.
This was such a thrilling and dark novel, with a wild premise and an even wilder outcome. From the word 'go', McAllister tore an absolute storm throughout the pages. I was kept guessing right the way through, and each time I thought I knew what was coming, I turned out to be wrong, which is such a guilty pleasure of mine. McAllister creates the policing scene so well, and I really enjoyed the conversations between Julia and her colleagues in the station. I always find it fascinating to get a glimpse into the life of a detective, what it's like when they're working and the conversations they may have. Another thing McAllister did such a fantastic job of, is the balance that women struggle with between their working life and their family life. It was obvious that Julia honoured her position as a detective and she took her role very seriously. So much so, her marriage had taken a turn for the worst because of it. It was refreshing to see this side of Julia's life as well as the non-stop life she led as a detective, and really opened her character up to the reader also.
I loved the twists and turns in this novel. The guessing, the secrets, the gradual unveiling of the characters' pasts and how it was all connected to what was happening in the present. McAllister is exceptionally talented at bringing her stories to life, they're always so vivid and feel so real to the reader that it's almost as thought you're stood right beside Julia throughout the novel.
I raced towards the end of this novel, desperate for the finale. I just couldn't wait to see how it would all end and where the characters would be when I turned the final page. Whether each of them had found what they'd been looking for, and reached a final place of peace.
JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON by GILLIAN MCALLISTER was a fantastic crime-thriller, with numerous dark truths to unearth and characters to be suspicious of. I loved everything about this story and I already can't wait for more from the author.
